Drones are a whole lot of fun and you will find a plenty of information on drones on this site. But have you considered how to build your own drone? This is actually not as hard as it sounds as there are a plenty of DIY drone kits out there that help you make your own drones.
The interesting thing about building your own drone is that your DIY drone is likely to be costlier than some of the battle-ready models in the market, such as the ever popular Parrot A.R. Drone 2.0. But the satisfaction you’ll get out of making your owning UAV and flying it successfully may be compared to the feeling the Wright Brothers felt back in 1903, when they made the first flight in history!
So let’s look at some of the options available to you and how to get started with building your own quadcopters.
Here’s what you need…
Obviously, if you’re to build your own drone, you will need propellers and a way to control the drone. What you can do on your own is to design a completely unique body for the drone, something that is quite unlike anything else available in the market. You can build the entire drone body out of Lego.
There are several online stores out there that offer you the documents you need to help build your own kit and give you a template you can use. You can make your drone body as distinctive and special as possible.
Transmitters and Receivers for your DIY Drone
Your drone will require a transmitter and receiver that allow you to control it while it’s in air. One of the options you may want to consider is the Turnigy 9X, which has great features and is quite affordable.
How to Build You Own Drone – DIY Drone Kits
It is actually a much better idea to buy all the electronics you need for the drone as a kit. There are a plenty of DIY drone kits available in the market. You may know DJI as a maker of the best high-end drones. What you probably didn’t know is that DJI makes DIY kits as well, to help you make your own drone. It supplies everything you need to get started.
The DJI E310 kit, for example, comes with four motors, four propellers, four ESCs (or Electronic Speed Controllers – that keep your drone stable and flying in the air), and several other parts and gear that are essential for your project. While the DJI E310 kit is among the most expensive DIY drone kits in the market, we certainly think it is worth a buy.
You will also need to buy a flight controller for your drone. One of the most popular flight controllers you can consider is the DJI Naza M V2 GPS. It is available individually as well as a part of a complete kit. You will need an airframe as well to mount the parts of the drone. And yes, be careful about the battery you buy for it – the battery should offer long life, but be affordable as well. This is a delicate balance to have.
There are many other great drone kits available out there that are less expensive than what you get from DJI. One I admire most is the JMT F550 Drone Heli FlameWheel Kit. This DYI kit is perfect for beginners. It comes with a flight controller, an ESC and a lightweight frame and importantly, reasonably priced as well.
So, that’s how to build your own drone. Do let me know about your experience when you get started with your DIY project, and if you have any questions or get into a difficulty while building it, do send me a message. I’ll certainly help you out if I can.
If you prefer, there´s a nice training course about this.
I wish you all the best, and remember that if you have any questions or comments you can post them in the comments section at the bottom of any blog post. It’s great to hear from you.
