Syma X8HC Review

As a long-time drone enthusiast, I am always on the lookout for promising new quadcopters. Syma is a company that I’ve had my eyes on for a while. I am a fan of their affordable quadcopters such as the Syma X8C which pack quick a punch. I also like the WiFi FPV drones Syma X8HG and the Syma X8HW.

But the one really had a lot of fun playing with was the Syma X8HC, which is an improvement over its predecessor, Syma X8C. I cover this new quadcopter in detail in this Syma X8HC Review. So let’s get started and find out what’s so great about affordable toy grade drone.

Difference between Syma X8HC  and Syma X8C

From the point of view of design, there isn’t much of a difference between the Syma X8HC and its predecessor Syma X8C. But the new drone offers better photography, has useful features such as the Altitude Holder and is better for shooting videos. In fact the Altitude Holder is a great feature to have and generally, only the most expensive drones have it. So it’s nice to see it in Syma X8HC.

Syma X8HC Review

Let’s look at the main features of Syma X8HC.

Headless Mode

Headless mode is a useful feature to have for kids or those who are new to drone flying. It allows you to fly the drone without caring much about where the quadcopter’s front is pointing at during takeoff. Drones with headless mode are easier to control. Syma X8HC  has this feature. But this isn’t a big thing because most drones nowadays have a Headless Mode. I am not a particularly big fan of this feature, I just think that if you really want to master drone flying, you shouldn’t fly using the Headless Mode.

 Altitude Holder

I love this new feature that many drones have these days called the Altitude Holder. This allows you to set the height on the barometer. Earlier only the most expensive drones used to have Altitude Holder, but today even something as inexpensive as Syma X8HC has it. Altitude Holder is a terrific functionality to have for taking great photographs and shooting exceptional videos. It allows you to lock the height at which the drone flies and ensures that this height is maintained. So you can concentrate on taking great photographs instead of worrying about other things.

 LED lights for Night Flying

Night flying is the latest thing in drone flying. The Syma X8HC comes with LED lights that allow you to fly easily in very dim light. However, this is not something I recommend for kids or beginners.

Aerial Stunts

You can perform amazing aerial stunts such as a 360 degree flip in midair with this quadcopter. But I suggest not performing too many stunts with the Syma X8HC because it doesn’t have the best battery life.

The Syma X8HC comes with a 2MP camera for photos and 1MP camera for videos. Is this the best you will get? Certainly not, but considering the price, which I will discuss next, it’s good enough. The camera is undetachable, which I didn’t appreciate. But you can take photos and shoot videos with just a click on the controller. I liked that the Syma X8HC does allow for an above average FPV experience. The real time video transmission is done directly to your phone.

Syma X8HC Review

Syma X8HC costs $86.99 on Amazon, which I think is a decent price for it.

If there are any drawbacks to this drone, it is the battery life. The 7.4V 2000 mA  Lipo Battery that comes with this drone offers a flight time of just 5 to 7 minutes. Certainly not the best. Also, the remote can control the drone up to a distance of 70 meters only.

Syma X8HC ReviewFinal Thoughts

Syma X8HC is one of the two drones I’ve tried recently from Syma, a new company that has been making big waves among the drone community. It is an affordable drone that comes with nifty features such as Altitude Holder, takes great photographs and shoots decent videos.

I wish the battery life was better, but other than that, no real complaints. Syma X8HC is available for a great price and it’s a great buy for beginners to intermediate drone fliers.

    Great Post sir,

I had no idea you could get a drone this cheap and does this much.

Yes, I know the battery life is poor, but can you buy extra batteries?

  2. Furkan

I think syma can be good for me because I am a total beginner and would love to try something easy to control. Do you think is the quality price good?
Note: It will be my first drone.

Hi Furkan, if you are a beginner, and only want it for recreational purposes, then this Syma X8HC its a good option for you.

But if you want to take pictures or shoot some videos, this 2MP Camera won´t give you the best quality.

Considering the price of this version, I must say that it has a good relation Quality/Price.

      Thanks for your comment.

    Hi Emanuel,

Wow, $87 for those features and a camera, entry level drones certainly have come a long way in a short time. I bought a similarly priced one a few years back, and it had night flying capabilities and that’s about it. Does the Syma have a return home feature on low battery?

HI Adam, I fully agree with you about Drones are getting cheaper day by day.

No Adam, this Syma X8HC doesn’t have the Return Home feature on low battery.

      Thanks for your comment.

Very useful info thanks. My brother and I are in the market for a cheapish drone just to mess around with on my dad’s farm. This seems acceptable as I was under the impression drones generally cost quite a few bucks.

    Thanks again.

Hi Martim, You must install the blades in a correct way.

Check in the manual, to see which propeller corresponds to which engine.

          Hope it helped you.
