Syma X8HG Review
Syma is a drone company that I always had an eye out for, as they make some of the best toy grade drones in the market. I have flown a couple of popular Syma quadcopters in the past, the Syma X5SW and Syma X8W, and I enjoyed them immensely.
Recently, I have had the occasion to try two of their new drones, the Syma X8HG and Syma X8HC. Syma X8HG is a large WiFi FPV (First Person View) drone that I had countless hours of fun with. Hence this Syma X8HG Review.
With the X8HG, Syma has been looking to make a name for itself in the market for cheap FPV drones. There is a lot about this new drone that I liked and a couple of things that I didn’t really appreciate. But here’s what you should know – if you are looking for great drone photography on a budget, the Syma X8HG should be your top choice.
Syma X8HG Features
The X8HG is an FPV (real time video transmission) drone. So it is capable of live aerial video recording. It comes with an HD 8MP camera which records at a 720p resolution, unlike the Syma X8HC, which only has a 2MP camera. It is capable of above average photography and shoots videos of a decent quality, certainly much better than what you get with other toy grade drones in this price range.
The is also a mount that carries the Syma camera and external cameras such as the SJCam if you like. SJCam is an alternative to the much pricier GoPro cameras. The quadcopter does not have its own FPV monitor; instead it connects to your smartphone by WiFi and delivers live video.
Many new drones in 2016 come with an Altitude Holder. This is a new feature that allows you to lock the height at which you are flying the drone. This feature is also called as “Barometer Set Height”. The new Syma X8HG comes with this feature. So you can shoot videos or take photographs easily without worrying about the stability of the flight and other conditions. This is a great feature to have on a low cost drone. Normally this is seen only in the much more expensive drones from DJI and Parrot.
360º Aerial Stunt
I loved performing the 360º aerial stunt with this drone, and it is easy to learn as well. Even children can master it easily. The stunt can be performed with just a click of the remote.
LED Lights for Night Flying and Headless Mode
I love night flying and I liked that this quadcopter comes with bright LED lights. This made night flying real fun. And it’s easy too, because of the Headless Mode. Headless Mode means not having to worry about which direction the drone’s front is pointing at. Just fly it regardless. This is a very popular feature with beginners to drone flying. Kids in particular find flying the Syma very easy because of this feature.
This quadcopter is powered by a 7.4V 2000 mA Lipo Battery and offers a flight time of 5 to 7 minutes, which is not really all that impressive. It takes 200 minutes for battery to charge. I wish the battery power was more than this.
Syma drones have always had a negative – their lack of control distance. This quadcopter can fly up to a distance of 70 to 80 meters from the pilot handling the remote. Not impressive. But okay enough, considering the low price, which I discuss next.
The Syma X8HG costs £100.49 or $128 on Amazon, which is a pretty decent price for a high quality toy grade drone.
Syma X8HG Review – Final Thoughts
I enjoyed flying the Syma X8HG and took some great pictures and videos with it. It is one of the best low-cost large WiFi FPV quadcopters in the market with advanced features such as Altitude Holder. It is capable of performing nice little stunts as well. The only negatives are the low flight time and the control distance, but given how affordable this drone is, that should not be a concern.
I wish you all the best, and remember that if you have any questions or comments you can post them in the comments section at the bottom of any blog post. It’s great to hear from you.
