The DJI Phantom 4 Review

I don’t have to tell you about DJI – it is the leading manufacturer of consumer drones. No other company, not even Parrot, or for that matter 3D Robotics, comes anywhere close to the position achieved by DJI in the consumer drone industry. In this DJI Phantom 4 Review, I will talk about a new drone from the company that is an upgraded version of the popular DJI Phantom 3 and Phantom 2.

The big difference between the Phantom 4 and its predecessors is the vast improvement in flight time and control range, which I will discuss later. It also comes with new features such as the sense and avoid systems. Otherwise, there is not much of a difference between Phantom 4 and Phantom 3. Let’s discuss some of the features of this new upgraded version of DJI Phantom.

DJI Phantom 4 Design

The Phantom 4 consists of a quadrangular design with 4 pairs of propellers and landing stands. I find this design to be aesthetically pleasing, and yet very practical. It is flexible and quickly adapts to any changes in direction. The landing stands not only allow you to land the drone safely, but offer stability in the air.

DJI Phantom 4 Flight Modes

The Phantom 4 consists of multiple flight modes such as the sports mode and the tap-to-fly mode.  The tap-to-fly mode is just like the autopilot mode on an airplane and basically means that the drone flies by itself. The sports mode makes you work hard to control the drone and gives you a real drone flying experience. I strongly suggest using the sports mode only when flying the Phantom 4.

DJI Phantom 4 Camera

The Phantom 4 consists of a 720p HD Camera which takes great pictures and records world class images that are then streamed live to the controller. The DJI camera has several excellent uses. It can be used for aerial surveillance, nature watching, recording the traffic below or getting a fantastic view of the sunset.

DJI Phantom 4 Controller

The Phantom 4 consists of a remote controller with an LCD screen that allows you to control the drone and navigate its flight.  The controller receives live video streaming from the drone camera and displays them on the LCD screen. You can change the flight modes by simply pressing a button on the controller. It is as easy as it gets and gives you amazing flight experience.

DJI Phantom 4 – Other Interesting Features

The DJI Phantom 4 consists of other interesting features such as an obstacle sensor that identifies obstacles in its path and an automated system that ensures that the drone is navigated away from the obstacles. This feature only works when the drone is on its tap-on-fly mode. The Phantom 4 is equipped with GPS technology as well, which allows it to be used for surveillance work or anything that involves tracking a particular object.

DJI Phantom 4 – Flight Time

The Phantom 4 gives you a very impressive flight time of 28 minutes on a single recharge. This is one of the best flight times you will get for a consumer drone.

DJI Phantom 4 – Control Range

The Phantom 4 has an incredible control range of 5 km. This means you can use this drone to get high quality live feed from areas that have suffered from a natural disaster or war. That’s why the DJI Phantom 4 is favored by journalists.

The DJI Phantom 4 Review – Final Thoughts

The DJI Phantom 4 is the King of Drones. It has all the features you would expect from a consumer drone and more. It gives you an amazing flight time and incredible control range. You can use it for a wide variety of purposes, for journalist, film shooting, research and more. What’s more, the Phantom 4 costs $1,199, which is actually a decent price considering its high quality. It is my favorite drone of 2016 so far.

my husband has been wanting to get a drone, but wow, I did not realize how expensive these were. Which drone would you recommend for someone who is a relative beginner, but also does not want a mere toy, something with more substance then just the basics, but a little cheaper than the Phantom 4? Thanks

Hi Claudia, if your husband wants to get a drone but, he is only a beginner and don´t want to spend a lot of money, but having almost the same features as the Dji Phantom 4, he may opt for the Dji Phantom 3 Standard that has been considered the best drone to learn how to fly, and its price its very affordable today.

      Hope it helped you.

      Thanks for your comment.

I was looking up drones for my son who is a fanatic. I had no idea all the things it could do and see why he would want one…most likely this one as it’s your top pick. It is a bit more expensive than I thought, but considering what you get.. I will be back (with him) and consider our options. Thanks for the great information.

Hi Maria, I´m glad that you enjoyed my article.

Despite being a relatively expensive drone, given that it is a Top drone and that has many qualities to explore, it is worth investing in such a machine, and if he is truly a fan of drones, I bet he will not regret it.

Thanks for this well-written review. I like how this drone has different flight modes, while the tap-to-fly mode will be very fun to use. Although the sports mode is more “real” since you have FULL control of the drone. I’ll definitely be using this mode for when I’m trying to test my skills, especially when I’m photographing some great shots. You answered all my questions and concerns that I had before I read this review, so thank you!

Thank you for the article. I think drones are real remarkable. I know someone are a lot cheaper than others. The pictures and the quality you get sometimes you have to pay a hefty price. My son is going to college for Video Communications. He wants to be a director, he works with a drone at his school and it gives him excellent shots. Thinking of getting him one for his graduation gift.

I use to fly airplanes and no matter the limitations were you still had fun flying. I look at these drones and see hours of enjoyment. How long does it take to charge the batteries?

Interesting detailed read. I visited a friend a short while back and I found him controlling one. That’s when my love affair with drones began. The DJI has some really cool features. It’s definitely on my ‘must have’ list. A question: do drones come with user regulations? I mean, seeing as it has a camera and can record quite an amount of data. Thanks.
